How to Create a GetReponse Account

This entry is part of 5 in the series Starter Email

There are many other Email Marketing list hosting companies available on the internet. UpstartMediaMarketing has found GetResponse to be versatile and responsive. But they also provide many options to allow us to integrate social media, shopping carts, and membership programs into our web forms and subscriptions. This is important.

Although you may use any email marketing list hosting company that you desire, all of our training will be illustrated in GetResponse.

Why this matters

Even with the power of social media, building a list individuals who are interested in your ideas and products is still the most powerful and productive method of communicating with your potential customers. All other methods are waiting for the user to come to you. Email provides a method for us to contact them. If you learn to build a strong relationship with the people on your list, then they will respond to you when you provide quality products. As your list grows, your ability to generate revenue “on demand” grows.

Statistically speaking, each email on your list is worth $1.00 per month if you market to the list. Of course, we’ll teach you how to create a quality list, so it’s likely your list will be worth much more than that. So building a quality email list is one of the most vital things you can do for your business. Soon, your list will grow to 250, 500, 1000 and far beyond.

Do not overlook the power of a list.

Things to Watch For in this Video

  • When you sign up with GetResponse, you can sign up for the 30 day free trial. This means you can get all of your forms set up and get your website launched long before you need to pay even a small amount.
  • Make sure you watch how to set up a “From Field.” You can do this later, but it is easier if you do this while you are setting up.

Text in this Video

Welcome back to another Upstart Lifoff Training. This video is about creating a GetResponse account. That’s an email account for mass email. But more importantly, it is about how to update some important configurations when you set up the email account. I overlooked this when I first used GetResponse and couldn’t figure out what was not working correctly. So we’ll help you get this started correctly.

If you haven’t signed up for a GetResponse Account, we’ll show you how to sign up and set it up in this video. You can also read our GetResponse Product Review in our Product Review category.

To get started with Get Response, Just go to http://www.getresponse.com. This is the front page. To sign up, click Pricing at the top of the window. It will immediately take you to a Pay-as-you-Grow window, which shows the pricing options. One reason I like GetResponse is that you can sign up for free and use it completely free until your list grows above 100 people. This gives you time to learn how to use it, set up your forms, create your follow-up sequences before you need to pay anything.

Just a quick note.

But for right now, instead of clicking the list for 250, Click “Smaller List” button. It will show you the option for 100 Subscribers. I recommend you start there. Click Sign Up Free.

I’m going to create a test account to show you how. You will need to follow and set up your real account. Stop the video at any time if you need to take the time to follow along.

Go ahead and type in a username. It will check to make sure there are no other users with the same username. Once the username is verified, go ahead and put in the information. Of course, I am just using a test email address. You will want to put in an email address associated with your website domain. If you are hosting with us on RackSpace Cloud servers, then you will be able to create as many email addresses as you need. You will need to see our video called Creating Email Addresses in the Control Panel. This video is in the Control Panel and Server Setup category.

No obviously I’m putting in fake information in this test account. You will need to put in correct information.

I am not filling in the company information, but if you have a company or are starting a personal company, go ahead and put that information in as well. Finally, you will need to type in the Captcha image. You may see these around the internet. A Captcha form like this one is used to keep internet “robots” from submitting forms. The spiders cant read the letters because they are graphic, not text. Humans can read the image, so we enter the form. We’ll talk more about security on your own website in another video. Those will be in the Tools & Resources section.

Ok. As soon as you submit the form, the first page will come up and tell you that you need to activate your account. So you will need to go to your email in-box to find the confirmation email from GetResponse. Open the email from Get Response. There will be a nice big blue graphic that says “Activate Your Account Now.” It will take you back to the GetResponse web page. And you can click the “login” link. See how easy this is?

So now, go ahead and log in with the username and password that you just set up.

So the first thing you want to do is go to my account in the top-right-hand corner. When the next window comes up, we will be updating three sections. First, set up your Social Media Accounts, Edit Account Details, and Manage ‘From Fields’. Let’s first click on Social Media Accounts.

If you already have a Facebook and Twitter account, you can set up your these Social Media links. If you don’t have a Facebook or Twitter account, you can always come back and add this later, but don’t forget. I’ll start with the Twitter Account. It’s simple to do. Just enter your Twitter username or email and the Twitter password. It’s very quick. If you see the green checkmark, you know it created a connection.

Next, do the same thing with your Facebook account.

Now, when you send an email out, it will ask you if you want to update your Twitter and your Facebook account. You absolutely want to do this to notify your fans and Twitter followers to read your email. GetResponse will store a version online. And of course it will contain links to your website. This is one of the things that you might have overlooked, but integrating your social media is an important part of building your internet presence.

Now, let’s go back to “My Account” in the top right corner. And then we’ll edit account details.

I want to highlight the signature on the bottom. Remember, CAN-SPAM requires a valid US mailing address. These items that are surrounded by square brackets will pull your company address and put it at the bottom of each email. You might remember in the email introduction that I said a mailing service such as GetResponse will automatically help you follow the rules. Now, you just need to format the signature by putting in returns, etc.

Since I am doing this for my Bears OTP website, I could add a title at the top of the signature. So make sure you update your signature just as you want it to appear.

Now, let’s go to My Account one more time.

This time we will manage your “From Fields”.

So what is a From Field? If you look in your email inbox, you will have a column that shows where each email came FROM. So, in GetResponse, we can set up several different From Fields. You won’t normally use too many, but you might have your standard FROM field, and then you may have an administrator From Field. You would use the regular one most of the time, but the Administrator From Field might be used if you need to send website notifications, such as when the website might be down for maintenance. Also, you might have different lists in other videos when we discuss List Segmentation and Launch Sequences.

So, the From Field is the name or title that you want your users to recognize whenever they get an email from you.

You can see that I might use a long name, or I can shorten this. Of course, I will put in a test email. You will want to use a legitimate email, or you might want to use a no_reply email. Our introduction video talked a little about that. But, you can also watch our video called Creating a No-Reply Email Address. That video is in the Control Panel and Server Setup category.

Ok. I’m going to add this From Field. Now because this is the email I used to setup GetReponse, I will not need to confirm this email. I’ve already done it once. But if you choose, for your From Field, to use a different email address than the one you used to setup GetResponse, you will need to confirm that email as well. Each new from field that uses a different email address, you will get an email to confirm the new email address you are adding.

If that email was set up to be a no_reply field, you will need to turn off the no_reply function until you have confirmed the email address. Again, if you have questions about that, watch the video Creating a No-Reply Email Address.

Ok. That’s all for you need to do to set up your GetResponse account.
